GIS TECHNICIAN INTERNSHIP

Job Description: 

We are seeking a GIS Technician Intern with strong background in GIS. Successful candidate must be proficient with ArcGIS 10 Desktop suite with practical experience in data creation and editing. Candidate will edit and create various GIS datasets employed in the production of various map products. Process a working knowledge of AutoCAD software and or practical application the software in an engineering environment. Candidate is also expected to perform certain entry-level computer software and hardware installations. Commitment of 10 - 20 hours’ work per week in our Boston office is required.

Specific duties will include

-    Assist GIS/CAD Manager in the preparation of GIS mapping products utilized in licensing studies for hydropower projects.

-   Integrates AutoCAD drawings into GIS system to produce publishable maps that comply with federal and company standards.

-    Generate META data, organize and catalog various GIS data layers.

-     Perform advanced spatial analyses using ArcGIS tools. Ability to write and read python arcpy code is a

plus.

-    Organize, manipulate and evaluate data using spreadsheets.

-    Performing certain computer software and hardware installations and maintenance.

-    Assist hydraulic engineer in preparation of data.

-    Prepare technical reports including figures and graphics.

-    Excellent communication skills.

-    Proficiency with computer and tech savvy is highly desired.

-    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

-    Ability to manage time and priorities.

-    Good computer skills, knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software (CAD and programming skills are a plus).

SENIOR HYDROPOWER ENGINEER

We are seeking a Civil or Mechanical Engineer with experience in the hydropower plant design, evaluation, rehabilitation, construction and cost estimating. Specific responsibilities will include feasibility studies, functional layout, structural design, specification writing, and, construction oversight for the licensing, development, building and rehabilitation of many types of hydroelectric related structures including powerhouses, dams, spillways, gates, intakes, foundations, penstocks, and fishways.  The position will require coordination with company management regarding value engineering to deliver high quality projects with high returns on investment.

-    A minimum of 5 years experience in designing, developing, evaluating or operating conventional hydro projects.

-    Professional Engineer certification is a plus.

-    Working knowledge of hydraulic modeling is a plus.

-    Good oral and written communication skills.

-    Experience in FERC licensing and other Federal and State permitting is a plus.

Other requirements:

-    Ability to travel to project sites and suppliers. (up to 25% travel)

-    Awareness and skill in determining proper project configuration for particular sites along with conformance with established standards.

-    Ability to read blueprints and manipulate CAD models.

-    Experience with creating and reviewing design drawing, design standards and equipment specifications for constructability and value engineering.

HYDRAULIC ENGINEER

Job Description:

Specific duties will include

-    Assist engineers in the preparation of hydrology and hydraulic portions of feasibility, and licensing studies for hydropower projects.

-    Assist engineers in the design of hydraulic structures.

-    Determine drainage areas, reservoir capacity for storage of water, analysis of stream cross sections, etc. as required by project specific needs.

-    Organize, manipulate and evaluate data using spreadsheets.

-    Use hydrologic and hydraulic computer programs (HEC models at a minimum, knowledge of SMS is a plus).

-    Assist with development of numerical models for hydrologic, hydraulic and sedimentation studies.

-    Prepare technical reports including figures and graphics.

TRANSMISSION/INTERCONNECTION PLANNER

Job Description:

-    Initiate and support interconnection process for new hydro development

-    Transmission and interconnection planning to support M&A and new development activities throughout the US

-    Substantial interaction with ISOs, RTOs, transmission and distribution utilities, public and private

-    Participation in the stakeholder process in the ISO context in support of project development

Skills and Experience: 

- Experience with transmission policy and regulatory issues within ISOs

- Experience with interconnection process at the transmission and distribution level

SENIOR EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT MANAGER

Job Description:

Free Flow Power, a leading developer of hydropower projects, is seeking an experienced manager of major equipment to develop and manage a manufacturing pipeline for small hydro turbines to be deployed in North America. This individual will monitor supplier progress and assist FFP’s engineering team through conceptual project design to detailed engineering and preparation of construction drawings. Responsibilities will include developing a supply chain for conventional hydro turbine systems, including creation of specifications, cost estimation, reviewing bids and supplier proposals. It will be essential to building strong working relationships with manufacturers.

The successful candidate will have the ability to review project design documents and drawings, and equipment specifications and understand the implications of hydrology and setting characteristics in relation to equipment performance characteristics and requirements. A strong technical understanding of major mechanical and electrical hydroelectric generating equipment and systems is necessary. A background in large machinery manufacturing and/or procurement is strongly desired.  

A good understanding of contracts, bid specifications and proposal requirements will be necessary to represent FFP’s project development team in negotiations with vendors, suppliers and other contractors. The ability to efficiently write and produce the needed documents and specifications to support budgetary quotation, vendor bids, and final procurement is required fundamental skill.   The position will require on going coordination with suppliers and FFP’s engineering team through the project development cycle.

Requirements

      -  Experience in strategic sourcing, cost analysis, and risk management of electro-mechanical equipment or other similar large rotating machinery

      -  Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Naval or Marine or related turbine manufacturing and deployment experience

      -  Ability to travel to project sites and suppliers (25-75% travel)

      -  Possess analytical and technical skills as required to support objectives
